Differences between Medullated and Non-medullated nerve fibre

1. It is also known as myelinated nerve fibre. It is also known non-myelinated nerve fibre.
2. The nerve fibre with medullary sheath is called medullated fibre. The nerve fibre without medullary sheath  is called non-medullated nerve fibre.
3. It is found in white matter of brain and spinal cord. It is found in grey matter of brain and spinal cord and in autonomous nervous system.
4. Nodes of Ranvier present. Nodes of Ranvier  absent.
5. It is white in colour. It is grey in colour.
6. Conduction of nerve impulse is faster. Conduction of nerve impulse is slower.
7. It has more diameter. It has less diameter.
8. Collateral nerve fibres are present. Collateral nerve fibres are absent.
9. More common in veretbrates. Almost all the invertebrates and some vertebrates have non-myelinated nerve fibre.
10. Schwann cell secretions lead to myelin formation. Schwann cells do not show any secretory function.
